From the Desk of Penny Tocci

An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency
of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It.

Sounds boring but it is anything but that. It's more like a scfi-thriller except it is not fiction, it is frighteningly real. Among other things the film shows dramatic footage of areas of the world just a few years ago and again in the present. Side by side many are unrecognizable.

The film brings together in an interesting way a lot of information. I urge all of you who haven't seen the film to take the time from your already busy schedules to see it. These changes are not going to take place at some distant time in the future - many are already in process.

For example, polar bears are becoming endangered because the sea is warning. There is less and less ice. They are drowning because they are having to swim farther than they are capable of. What does this have to do with us personally ...it means the world is becoming warmer, the ice deflects the sun back into the atmosphere. Without that the land and water absorb more and more heat which produces global warming which changes our weather which has both long and short term effects.

Many of the weather events we have become all to familiar with have their orgin in these ever increasing changes. It is truly a domino effect. These are not sound bites from environmental fanatics, all this information is backed by solid scientific research. If I go on I will be over my head and sometimes I can confuse myself.

I apologize If I have come on too strong, but I truly believe it will take the efforts of each and every one of us to reverse this process. We can not count on our federal government. Along with Australia we are the only country that did not sign the Keota(sp) treaty pledging to work to reduce global warming.

Some facts : 10 of the past 14 years have been the hottest since records have been kept. Fact: changes in warming are not due to ordinary weather cycles. Fact: (taken from the Boston Globe a couple of weeks ago) Cape Cod has been losing approximately 65 acres a year since 1997 when the study began. Fact: 140 million (yes million!) acres of forest in Alaska have died due to a beetle infestation. The beetles usually die in the winter but the temperature hasn't been cold enough.

I wonder if you would like to share your thoughts, ideas and comments on how to help? Or tell us how you are already helping the environment. Ok I am really going to stop.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

With love to you all,

Penny

Great post Penny!

There are ways everyone can help cut greenhouse gases and help stop global warming.
They are simple things, but can make a difference if everyone does them!

Re-cycle glass bottles, jars, newspapers and magazines and tin cans. Save them and take them to local re-cycling centres.

Re-use plastic shopping bags and envelopes, Don't get new ones.

When gardening, start a compost heap.

Use paper on both sides. Try and buy products that don't use much packaging.

Give unwanted gifts and clothes to a charity shop.

Only fill the kettle up with the amount of water you need to boil at that time.

Don't leave the TV or video on standby.

When washing clothes use the machine at 40 degrees, this helps conserve power.

Switch lights off when you're not in the room.

Take showers instead of baths.

Great tips, Ed!

Another little thing - if you drink bottled water and have a little bit left, pour it into your watering can for the flowers.

As Ed and Donna pointed there are so many ways to conserve and most of them are win/win situations. A few weeks ago HBO had a program about global warming and what to do about it. In seattle OR. a pizza shop used the heat from the ovens to heat the hot water to do dishes, pans etc. They had no utlitiy bill for that. The web site associated with the film An Inconvienent Truth has some more unusual ways we can make some significant contributions to protect the environment not only for our selves but the little Toccis who aren't of the age yet to do that for themselves. The site is www.climatecrisis.net. Check it out.
