A "trip" to the Cape
I can remember some great summers traveling to what I called "The Cape," to visit with my grandparents, Pat and Josephine Tocci at their cottage in Parkwood Beach. When I drove onto Kingwood Street just past Ray and Ginny's little red cottage, I knew I was there. My grandfather and Uncle Jim Cioffi would be sitting at the picnic table out back, each drinking a bottle of Black Label beer when I arrived late Friday afternoon. Grandpa would tell me the pasta would be ready soon. I couldn't wait! When I entered the cottage through the porch, you could smell the sauce cooking. Grandma was in the Kitchen cleaning up the mess he had made at the stove. "Your grandfather made a mess again" was the first words out of her mouth. "Shut up Josephine" could be heard coming from outside. Nothing ever changed! It was always the same bickering.
After a great pasta dinner complete with Grandma's Jello and fruit for dessert, I walked up to Aunt Dora's and uncle Jim's house. The first person I saw was old Auntie sipping on a brandy (for medicinal purposes only). Her Mexican Chiuawa, "Chico" would be lying across her chair growling because she wanted to sit, and he wouldm't let her, showing his teeth like a wolf ready to attack. He never budged and always won, except for the one time Jean Sammarco couldn't take it anymore and threw him off the chair, he went flying across the room. Thank goodness Auntie was in taking a nap when that happened.
Uncle Jim would be at the sink opening up some quahog's that were freshly picked earlier that day, and Aunt Dora was at her stove preparing another gourmet meal. They would always ask me to stay and eat dinner. I never refused.
Friday night was Poker night at the Cioffi's. Al and Laura DiBello would be there telling stories about the ghosts living in their cottage. Pat and Josephine would be arguing about who's turn it was next to play, and Aunt Dora would be bringing out incredible home made cakes and pies for snacks when it was time to break from the game. The fun we all had during those special days will never be forgotten. What memories! I could go on and on. My favorite part of my trips to the cape is still the memory of "never losing" to Marcia when we got together and played word games like like Scrabble and Boggle. Oh, how she tried each time to win, but never was able to succeed. I still hold the title of Grand Champion after all these years. Sorry Marcia!

What a great, descriptive memory, Ed. Thanks for sharing!
Parkwood Beach holds many memories for a lot of us. Walking to Little Beach on the back dirt road was always fun. It seemed like it took FOREVER to get to the beach. I couldn't wait to get in the water! I could spend all afternoon there. I look at the beach now and wonder how it seemed so big then...
Ralph and I enjoyed reading Ed's memories of his visit's to Cape Cod. This is fun catching up on everybody's news and sharing memories. What a great idea!!! MamaTocci
Al,
Congratulations...You finally can comment now. The cheese is on it's way. Enjoy!
Hey Ed....it was interesting to hear that you haven't ever lost a boggle game to Marcia and are the undisputed champion. Well, I thought that title was mine, too. You see, Aunt Dora, my sister Ann and Cindy all tried to win a game of boggle...any game of boggle from me, but I have always been fortunate enough to stay undefeated. I remember one night being kept up until 3 am with others trying so hard to win, but even in my sleepy state, I still won. Now, I haven't played boggle for many, many years, but if you're still game, I'd love to play some time. It used to be my very favorite game, but it's hard to find anyone who plays nowadays. Anyway, I enjoyed all of your memories for all of your comments. Take care dear "young" cousin. God bless always.....love, your older cousin, Lillian
(p.s...I've never sent anything like this, so I hope it goes through)
Lillian,
So very nice to hear from you. I hope all is well. Although I have not played boggle for many years myself, It sounds like a challange match is in order. Keep in touch.
With all do respect...Best wishes to you, my eldest female cousin.
Love you
Hello Lillian! It's great to hear from you. I hope all is well with you and Leo.
I think we should get a family game of Boggle together since, I, too, am quite good at the game. It was my favorite game as a child, too. That and Monopoly.
If you and Ed want to sharpen your skills there is an online version that isn't called Boggle, but it's a smilar game and it's for free!
If you go to this link:
http://games.myway.com/
And then click on Letter Linker you will get the free game. It will come up with 'download verison' first, but if you wait a few seconds that goes away and it will just say 'click to start'. I'm slightly addicted....
Dear Poor Ed, it's a shame your memory is failing you at such a young age. You may think you are the champion of boggle, but actually you were the champion of looking at all our words. And Aunt Lillian I remember you were a champion. I however didn't inherit the boasting qualities of a true Tocci, so I'm not going to tell you how great I was at Boggle.
Thanks Ed for sharing the memories of Parkwood Beach and family times there. It was such a great time and so many of us have memories of that era, and you certainly have jogged the old memory.
Ask Karen if it was her who stepped on Auntie. She’ll know what you mean.
Ask Cheryl why she had branches sticking out of the fenders of her car? Sneaking into the drive-in???
And just how much beer did my Dad really drink? Anyone want to admit to sneaking a beer or two out for their own consumption? not I !!!
How many of you actually slept at Al DeBello's haunted cottage? I did many times and have I got stories for you?
Who was looking in my bedroom window (Parkwood Beach) while Melanie and I were showing off our tans?? Was it the same guy with the white shirt often found wandering in our backyard in the middle of the night? What was his name???? Jackie!
Does any of this spark a memory or two for you? Yeah...they were great times with lots of laughter and memories to last a lifetime. And hopefully to share with many generations to come.
Marcia,
We all understand one's ability to forget things that might have been tramatic as a youngster, like losing at word games etc., but it was so nice that you could remember some of the great and memorble times we all had in Parkwood Beach.
I enjoyed reading your comment very much, and encourage you to become a family writer on this blog.
Love ya!
