Paving in 2006
Driving to work this morning, I was delayed about 10 minutes or so at a construction site in the middle of town.
For the last week or so there has been a section of the main street that the town dug up to fix a hydrant connection in front of a store.
The area was about 30' by 30' maybe.
It has been dirt for about a week or so.
This morning the town had blocked off this area and were preparing to pave this patch of dirt.
They had a flagman at either end of the street to direct traffic, 4 dump trucks,(only one had asphalt in it), a front end loader, a roller, several town pickup trucks, a street sweeper and a PAVING MACHINE !!
Not only that, there was about 15-20 workers standing around holding various tools,(shovels, rakes etc.)( no wheelbarrows)
I had to laugh as I went by and saw this big operation. I thought back to the days of working for Ed Tocci and Sons.
Ed would have left 2 guys there with a small dump truck, a rake, a wheelbarrow, a hand roller and a set of asphalt shoes. I can hear him now... "you guys finish up this little patch and then get over to"....(wherever the REAL job was for the day)
Now, I guess progress is having all this equipment and workers. Working for Ed and having all the stuff the town had, we could have paved 128 !
Our tax dollars at work !

He did pave the old 128 which is now known as Greedale Avenue. What progress!
You were lucky, Al. When I work with dad, he didn't leave me with any asphalt shoes!
Well Glenn, now that I think back on it,Ed usually sat on the power roller(he was the boss),Ed Burke worked the hand roller and the tamper.
Burke was the only one who got the asphalt shoes,(I think Ed only had 1 pair). The rest of us raked and wheeled wheelbarrows with our own shoes.
If anybody complained,Ed would call you a baby, then if you complained more, you would get the famous "HEY,if you don't want to work,go home".
I wore out a pair of work boots working asphalt. They had holes in them and were taped on the top with duct tape. Ed kept telling me to get new boots, but I couldn't see spending money on new boots just to get them wrecked,so I just ignored Ed.
One night after we brought all the trucks back to the yard,Ed,Phil Mack, and maybe Ronny, wrestled me to the ground and took my boots. Ed cut them up with a hatchet.
He wouldn't pay for new ones either. Nice guy !
Those were the days....... !
